2 Read the texts and match each text (A-G) with its heading (1-8). You can only use each heading once. There is one extra heading.

1 As popular as the film itself

2 Bad word of mouth

3 The right product for the right situation

4 A part of the scenery

5 A way to cut costs

6 The price of prime time TV

7 Expensive special effects

8 Spending to make money

A The success of a film doesn't always come from the number of people who see it. Companies can make a huge amount of money from selling merchandise related to a film. In 2012, the Walt Disney Company paid 4 billion dollars to buy Lucasfilm and the rights to Star Wars. This may seem a lot, but Disney expects to make $5 billion in sales of toys, books, and lots more, from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens; and this film is just the first of many new Star Wars films.

B The latest James Bond movie, Spectre, is said to be the most expensive Bond film yet at $350 million. Luckily, producers did not have to pay for it all themselves. For Bond films, major brand names will pay to have their product used in the film. The Aston Martin DB10 that Bond drives was designed especially for the film and donated for free by the car company, making the film a lot easier to finance.

C Advertisers can get their product into a film long after it has finished filming. There are a number of places that products can be digitally inserted. It may be a poster for the latest smartphone on the wall behind the leading actor or it may be a soft drink at the front of the fridge as he or she opens it. You may not notice that it is in the background, but that doesn't stop advertisers paying for their product to be there.

D In these days of computer-generated imagery (CGI), advertisers can target a particular consumer group. For example, the type of car that an actor drives on screen can be changed to suit the area a film or TV series is shown. In a rich area, where consumers have more money to spend, you might see a luxury car; in a poorer one, you could see a more affordable vehicle. It's the same actor in the same scene, but thanks to CGI, he's driving a different car.

E Trailers, those 2-minute advertisements for a film, are a vital part of any advertising campaign and are sometimes as eagerly awaited as the films themselves. Once online, they can get thousands of views within minutes. Breaking social media records becomes a news item in itself and often hits the front page of news sites. As a result, the film receives even more publicity; not only because it's a new film but also because it has sparked such a huge amount of interest.

F How popular a film will be does not rely on advertising alone. During the filming of 2015's Fantastic Four, there were reports of disagreements between the director and the film company. When the film was finally released, reviews were generally negative. Things got even worse when the film's director went onto social media to criticise the cinema version of the film. Despite his comments being quickly deleted, the damage had been done. The film did not do well at the box office and the sequel was quietly cancelled.

G The cost of promoting a major film can be surprisingly high. A film that has cost $100 million to make will often go on to spend another $50 million on advertising. For film companies willing to pay the most, there is a TV ad during the US Super Bowl, the final match in the American football championship. A 3-second ad during this televised match can cost more than $5 million, but it does reach an audience of over 110 million viewers, who are also potential buyers.
